Oklahoma Senate bill 83 is now dead, thanks to Anti-Vaccination groups applying pressure to Government officials. The law would have forced parents who opt out of vaccines to view pro-vaccination materials showing them the “dangers” associated with opting out of vaccines for their children.
According to FreePressOKC:
“I’m shocked that my Senate colleagues could vote against such a bill,” Senator Ervin Yen, R-Oklahoma City. He talked to Free Press soon after the vote. Yen is a physician.
He said he had “no idea” why the bill failed to pass on the floor. “I’ve been a Senator for about two years and sometimes I still don’t know the way things work around here,” said Yen.
A group called Oklahomans for Vaccine and Health Choice is being credited the most for this parental rights victory. They are strong advocates of parental choice.
In a post on their website, they stated this:“Even with the amendments, we believe that this bill is an infringement on parental rights.”
Senator Yen voiced his displeasure with what he felt were over the line attacks on his character, most notably, a flyer depicting him as a dictator.
A defeat such as this makes bringing to the forefront another piece of legislation that’s anti-parental rights a much larger task. We can thank those who fought the good fight for that.
The original version of the bill would have amended a 2011 law that gives parents the power to simply exempt their own child from vaccinations while enrolling them in school.
