Throwback Thursday: Tattoo Toxicity

I’ve never seen so many tattoos. If you still think tattoos are not dangerous, think again. Here is yet another peer-reviewed study showing that tattoo inks likely have high levels of heavy metals such as arsenic (As), hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)], mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), antimony (Sb) and barium (Ba).

In late August, Sierra Stain withdrew three tattoo pigments that were contaminated with microorganisms. Here’s the FDA report.

I wrote about tattoo toxicity in my Eye on the Evidence substack. It’s this week’s Throwback Thursday topic. When I started to do the research for that substack article, my jaw dropped at the amount of available information that has been published about tattoos, including history, equipment, ingredients, contaminants, and more.
